New volunteers in Banská Štiavnica
In history Banská Štiavnica was
known as one of the richest towns in the world because of its silver
and gold mines. Today what's left of it are just old streets and
buildings which tell the visitor of it's glorious past. Beautiful
historical buildings are slowly collapsing under its weight and the
streets are in very bad shape. The municipal community under the
leadership of the new and recently elected Mair is doing its best to
rebuild, but the truth is that a lot of money and time has to be spent
before Banská Štiavnica regains it's original fame. But besides
investors there is another solid hope - Volunteers!
Volunteers
of all ages from all over the world come here and help locals to
rebuild. One of the organizations that is mostly standing on good will
of the volunteers is the Hostel & Penzión Sv. JURAJ. More and more
new volunteers come among us and together we rebuild and make results.
Like in a puzzle game, peace by peace we are putting together parts of
a new Banská Štiavnica.
Soon old EVS volunteers will have to say goodbye, but new will
come. You can check our present and past EVS volunteers here. But there
are also ordinary volunteers who are willing to lend a hand. We had
volunteers even from Mexico last year. Last summer they digged out the
muddy dirt in our historical "secret" tunnel under the garden.
Now we received new volunteers. In the middle of June 6 new volunteers
aged from 19 to 27 came. Hanka, Martina and Lukaš are from Czech
republic while Tato and Bill are from Slovakia. They will stay here all
summer. Their activities are mostly focused on rebuilding the scout
camp in Hodruša and some parts of the hostel.
If you are also interested in helping out as a volunteer, you are more than welcome.Aleksander Rebula, EVS volunteer
